Imphal, Aug 8: Manipur gymnast Ariha Pangambam created history by becoming the first Indian to win the senior women's individual gold medal at the Asian Aerobic Gymnastics Championships, delivering a stunning performance at the 2026 edition held in the PhilippinesCompeting at the UCI-certified Tagaytay City Velodrome from August 4 to 7, Ariha secured the gold medal with an outstanding score of 19.100 points in the final. Her routine, marked by exceptional artistry, flawless execution and a high degree of difficulty, earned India its maiden gold in the senior women's individual aerobic gymnastics event. The championship, organised by the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines under the aegis of the Asian Gymnastics Union, featured over 400 athletes and officials from 11 countries, including India, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Mongolia, Cambodia, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong and the host nation.Ariha's landmark victory was widely celebrated in Manipur, with Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh describing the achievement as a moment of immense pride for both the state and the country. He said the gold medal reflected the talent, determination and hard work of Manipuri athletes and expressed hope that her success would inspire young sportspersons to pursue excellence on the international stage.Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla also congratulated Ariha, calling the victory a historic milestone in Indian gymnastics.
