Thirteen-year-old Ridip Panika may have lost his life in the raging floodwaters of Assam, but his final act of courage has left behind a story of love and selflessness that has touched hearts far beyond his village. A Class 7 student, Ridip reportedly lost his life while trying to save his three-month-old puppy, Borun, after the animal was swept away by the strong current during the floods.
The puppy survived. Ridip did not.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, True Hope Foundation has extended financial assistance of ₹1 lakh to Ridip’s family, offering a small measure of support to his parents as they come to terms with the loss of their only child and the devastation caused by the floods. Ridip was the only child of Deepak and Parbati Panika and was a student at a local Model School in Bamun Pukhuri village.
His family was already struggling with the impact of the floods, which damaged their home and swept away several belongings. But it was the circumstances surrounding Ridip’s death that made his story particularly heartbreaking.
According to reports, when the floodwaters began carrying away his young puppy, Ridip entered the strong current in an attempt to save his companion. His efforts saved Borun, but the force of the water carried the young boy away.
The images and videos of Ridip’s grieving parents and the puppy that survived have since evoked an outpouring of grief and sympathy on social media. ‘What he did was extraordinary’Speaking about the assistance extended to the family, Co-Founder, Mr.
Kuldeep Khatri of True Hope Foundation said the organisation could not undo the loss but wanted to stand beside the family during one of the most painful periods of their lives. He added, “I cannot bring your son back, and none of us can ever truly fill the void he has left behind.
What he did was extraordinary. He is a true superhero, and his courage and sacrifice will forever live on in our hearts.”
The foundation also expressed its commitment to extending continued emotional and financial support to the family as they navigate the difficult days ahead. The ₹1 lakh assistance comes at a time when the Panika family is dealing with two losses at once — the destruction brought by the floods and, far more painfully, the loss of their only child.
A story that goes beyond the floodsRidip’s story has resonated with people because it is not simply a story about a flood tragedy. It is a story about the instinctive bond between a child and an animal he loved.
