Imphal, Aug 9: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Sunday called upon people from all communities to unite and work together for peace, development and the preservation of Manipur’s territorial integrity.Khemchand stressed that Manipur’s territorial integrity had historically been safeguarded through the collective efforts of all communities.“Meiteis should not think only for Meiteis, Nagas should not think only for Nagas, Kukis should not think only for Kukis. We all should think for Manipur,” Khemchand said.He appealed to the Meitei community to play the role of a “big brother” and work towards keeping Manipur united.Singh made the remarks while taking part in a Har Ghar Tiranga Yatra organised by the Imphal Central District BJP and hosted by the Singjamei Mandal BJP in Imphal.The Chief Minister highlighted Manipur’s history of inclusive governance and recalled that the State was among the first in Southeast Asia to hold Assembly elections in 1947-48 under its own Constitution. He also noted that the first Speaker was a Paite tribal leader from Churachandpur district.Referring to his visit to Kangpokpi on Saturday, the Chief Minister said he had received a warm welcome from the people and did not find any indication of an intention to launch a blockade of the National Highways. Khemchand also referred to his recent visit to Jiribam, where people from different communities came together on a common platform to promote peace. He alleged that a few individuals were attempting to create a wedge between communities.He said the subsequent blast at Tronglaobi village in Bishnupur district, which killed two children, demonstrated that some people were still opposed to the return of peace in Manipur.He appealed to people to unite as Indians and work towards fulfilling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Viksit Bharat and Viksit Manipur.BJP Manipur in-charge Dr Ajeet Gopchade said that under Khemchand’s leadership, Manipur was moving towards peace and development. He also commended the role of women in the State, saying they braved the rain to make the Har Ghar Tiranga Yatra a success.Meanwhile, BJP State president A. Sharda Devi said the BJP-led government was making every effort to restore peace in Manipur. She noted that the Chief Minister had been regularly visiting the hill districts to facilitate the return of normalcy.She said opposition parties might criticise the government, but the BJP remained committed to taking Manipur towards peace and prosperity.
