JORHAT, ASSAM | AUGUST 9, 2026: Union Minister of State Pabitra Margherita on Sunday highlighted the extent of flood-related damage in Jorhat district, stating that while the situation has improved, several villages and thousands of residents continue to remain affected. According to figures shared by Margherita, 288 villages across Jorhat district were affected by the floods, while 59 villages are still inundated. The minister said the floods had affected 1,66,084 people in the district at the peak of the situation. At present, 20,209 people continue to remain affected by the floodwaters. The flooding has also caused significant damage to land. As per the figures presented by Margherita, 7,276 hectares of land were affected by the floods, with 376 hectares still remaining under water. Relief and Medical Assistance Speaking about relief and sanitation measures, Margherita said he had personally contributed 5,000 bottles of phenyl and five tonnes of bleaching powder, as he had done during previous flood situations. He also said that a medical camp has been launched by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with 16 doctors deployed to provide medical assistance to people in flood-affected areas. Margherita further stated that the government has been supplying relief materials in adequate quantities to the affected population. Flood Situation Continues to Improve The latest figures indicate that the flood situation in Jorhat has eased considerably from its peak, although several areas remain inundated. With hundreds of hectares of land still under water and more than 20,000 people continuing to be affected, relief and medical assistance remain a priority in the district. Authorities and relief teams continue to monitor the situation as floodwaters gradually recede across affected areas.
