Guwahati, Sept 1: Hours after three members of a family were killed in a devastating landslide in Mathgharia, authorities on Tuesday assured the bereaved family of full support in rescue and relief operations, with the government also promising compensation and relocation of people living in vulnerable hillside areas.Dimoria MLA Tapan Das, who also visited the affected area, said the government would provide compensation to the bereaved family and take steps to relocate people living in perilous conditions on hill slopes. “The government will announce compensation for the affected family. We will now bring down people living uphill in perilous conditions and make arrangements for their stay downhill,” he said. Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) Commissioner Chinmoy Prakash Phookan, who visited the site of the deadly landslide, said the civic body would coordinate with the district administration and the electricity department to extend assistance in the rescue and relief efforts. “As commissioner, I am deeply saddened to see this situation. I visited the site and expressed my condolences to the family. We have assured the district authorities and the electricity department that we will extend our complete support and assistance in the rescue operations,” he said. The assurances came after a landslide buried a house in Mathgharia during the morning hours while a family was asleep inside. Nagen Rajbanshi, his wife Sonu Rajbanshi and their daughter Meena Rajbanshi were killed, while their son, Biplab Rajbanshi, was rescued alive. “We have never seen a landslide of such magnitude in this area before. There have been smaller landslides, but this was the first deadly one. The house that was destroyed was located in a landslide-prone corner,” a local told the press. On the same day, another landslide was reported in Satgaon, where a woman, identified as P. Sumitra, was killed after a rock reportedly fell from a hillside onto a house. Four others inside the house were reported safe. The twin incidents once again brought Guwahati's vulnerability to landslides into focus. According to recent reports, 366 locations across the city have been officially designated as landslide-prone. Sunsali Hill accounts for the highest number of vulnerable spots at 77, followed by Noonmati with 40, Kharguli with 37, Khanapara with 33, Narangi with 31 and Hengrabari with 30.
