Guwahati, Aug 27: Assam Police has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the death of Bir Lachit Sena leader Manasjyoti Chetia in Sivasagar, amid questions surrounding the circumstances that preceded his death.The SIT was formed by Sivasagar Police and is headed by Sivasagar Deputy Superintendent of Police Lila Bora. The team includes Amguri Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mridul Hazarika, Nazira Police Station Second Officer SI (UB) Siraj Saikia and Nazira Police Station WSI (UB) Sumi Barman. Saikia has also been appointed as the Investigating Officer in the case. The SIT will examine the allegations contained in the complaint filed by the Bir Lachit Sena and look into the role, if any, of those detained in connection with the case. Police have so far detained five people named in the complaint. They have been identified as Abidur Rahman, Subera Begum, Selimur Rahman, Selima Begum and Anowara Begum. Chetia was found unconscious by the roadside at Prajabasti around 10 pm on August 23, reportedly after sustaining serious injuries in a road accident. He was taken to Dibrugarh Medical College and Hospital for treatment, where he later died on August 25. The formation of the SIT is expected to bring greater focus to the sequence of events preceding Chetia’s death. Investigators will examine available evidence, record statements and reconstruct the circumstances surrounding the Sunday’s incident. The probe will also assess whether the evidence supports the allegations made in the complaint and whether criminal liability arises from the incident. Meanwhile, Bir Lachit Sena chief Srinkhal Chaliha has welcomed the detention and thanked Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Minister Bimal Borah and Sivasagar police officer Papori Chetia. “The main accused, Mujamil Islam, against whom we had filed an FIR, has reportedly been identified by several people as being involved in a jihadi sleeper cell. If he is indeed involved in such a network, an encounter should be carried out,” Chaliha said. The claim regarding Islam’s alleged links to a jihadi sleeper cell has not been established by the police through the information provided so far. The SIT’s findings and the evidence gathered during the investigation will determine further action in the case. With inputs from IANS
