At least 13 people, including one child, were killed and 75 others injured in a Ukrainian drone strike on Nizhnekamsk in the Russian republic of Tatarstan, located more than 1,100 kilometres (680m) from the Ukrainian border. Ukraine's Armed Forces confirmed that the city's Tanevo oil refinery was hit during the attack, which lasted several hours overnight and into the morning.

Key details surrounding the strike include:

Casualties: According to the Uzbek consulate in Tatarstan, seven of those killed were citizens of Uzbekistan. Russian news agency RIA reported that most victims were staying in a hostel, and Russia's Investigative Committee stated civilian individuals not involved in military operations were present.

The BBC has not independently verified this information. Military Context: Andriy Kovalenko, head of Ukraine's Centre for Countering Disinformation, stated that targeted facilities are used to manufacture weapons and support Russia's war effort.

Oil refineries in Nizhnekamsk were previously hit on 12 June. Broader Aerial Activity: Moscow reported that Russian air defences shot down more than 450 Ukrainian drones overnight.

In Siberia's Tyumen region, fires broke out after several falling drones struck an industrial facility. The head of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, confirmed the strike and shared condolences with the victims' families, while Nizhnekamsk Mayor Radmir Belayev described the deaths as a "tremendous pain for all of us."

Moscow stated that "all those involved in the attacks" would face "inevitable and severe punishment."

Kovalenko asserted that "every civilian death in Russia is on [President Vladimir] Putin," adding, " Without Putin, there would have been no aggression. Without the aggression, these people would still be alive."

This incident is one of the deadliest single attacks on Russia since Moscow launched its full-scale war in Ukraine in 2022. Kyiv has stepped up long-range strikes on Russian energy infrastructure and warehouses, while Moscow continues regular aerial attacks on Ukrainian cities, including a combined drone and missile strike on Kyiv last week that killed 21 people.
