Ed student Shruti Upadhyay. Officials from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and LNIPE, including the Vice-Chancellor, held talks with the protesters and remained on campus through the day.

The students alleged delayed medical intervention, inadequate clinical assessment, failure of emergency transport and other procedural lapses led to the student’s death. They alleged that Shruti was initially given medication at the campus health centre and later admitted to Sonapur District Hospital.

A batchmate alleged that Shruti had earlier complained of back pain and was repeatedly given painkillers at the health centre. “She went to the health centre, where she was given a painkiller and sent back.

On September 4, when her condition worsened, our warden asked her to go to the hospital,” the student said. “Her condition was deteriorating, but we were told there was no need for an ambulance or referral and that she had only a normal bladder infection.

We want to know why she was not given immediate medical treatment and why her parents were not informed about the seriousness of her condition,” the student alleged. They have demanded an independent inquiry, action against anyone found responsible, reimbursement of Shruti’s hospital expenses and Rs 50 lakh compensation for her family.

They have also sought a 24/7 ambulance service and stronger emergency medical arrangements. Shruti, who specialised in lawn tennis, developed abdominal pain on September 4 and was admitted to Sonapur District Hospital.

She was later shifted to a private hospital in Guwahati, where she died on Tuesday. Her mother questioned why the family had not been adequately informed about her condition.

“She called me on September 4 and told me she was unwell and in hospital. I was not given any proper update by the institute about how serious her condition was,” she said.

The mother alleged that a teacher had told her Shruti was doing well and was coordinating with the doctor. “When I reached the hospital, I could barely recognise my daughter.

Her body was severely swollen and she was in tremendous pain. She was unable to pass urine.

I could recognise her only from her clothes,” she alleged. Student sources claimed doctors at the Guwahati hospital identified a serious complication involving Shruti’s appendix, with some alleging that it had ruptured.
