OpenAI has repurchased $7 billion worth of shares from its workforce in a tender offer designed to provide liquidity to employees, according to a report by Bloomberg.

The transaction valued the privately held artificial intelligence firm at $852 billion. This figure matches the valuation established during the company's most recent fundraising round in March, which added $122 billion to its balance sheet.

Key details surrounding OpenAI's financial status and public offering plans include:

IPO Outlook: Although OpenAI filed confidentially with the SEC in June for a potential public offering, the private tender offer suggests an IPO may not happen immediately. Financial Performance: The Wall Street Journal reported in April that OpenAI missed internal financial targets.

CEO Sam Altman acknowledged last month, "we did not have our best 12 months ever, which is mostly my fault, but we are about to have our best 12 months to date." Strategic Focus: The company is shifting its strategy toward scaling back certain bets and expanding its enterprise business.

Competitive Landscape: Rival firm Anthropic was reportedly profitable earlier this year, adding pressure on OpenAI to present strong financial results before going public. Private tender offers have increasingly allowed non-public technology firms to reward staff without undergoing a public offering.
