Nagaon, Sept 22: With an aim to conduct the bypoll to the Nagaon parliamentary constituency smoothly and in a disciplined manner, a review meeting was held under the chairmanship of District Election Officer and District Commissioner Aranyak Saikia with the zonal and sector officers engaged in election duty in the district. For the 1,339 polling stations under five Legislative Assembly constituencies in Nagaon district, a total of 203 sectors and 53 zonal officers have been engaged for election duty.

The officers have been directed to visit each polling station before polling, take stock of the facilities and inconveniences and make efforts to remedy them, an official press release added. The meeting, held at the conference hall of the District Commissioner’s office on Monday, discussed the various issues and challenges that the zonal and sector officers may face at the field level to conduct the electoral process smoothly.

Taking stock of the geographical location, communication, transportation system and security aspects of the polling stations, the Commissioner directed the officers to complete all preparations on time. The District Commissioner specially urged all the zonal and sector officers to ensure adequate lighting arrangements, protective boundary walls, drinking water, toilets and road connectivity at the polling stations under their jurisdiction so that voters and election personnel do not face any kind of problem on the day of polling.

He advised them to remain alert from now onwards and work to remove the problems at those polling stations where such issues exist. For the smooth conduct of the election, one sector is formed covering about 10 polling stations, while one zonal officer is given charge of three to four sectors.

The meeting was attended by Additional District Commissioners Gopal Sarma and Pallabi Gogoi, officials and employees of the Education and Public Health departments, along with Circle Officers of the district.
