Shillong, Aug 25: The Meghalaya High Court has directed the State government to furnish the status report and case diary before the court on the recent incidents of violence during the bike rally organised by Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on August 19. During the hearing of a suo-motu PIL on Monday, a bench, comprising judges W Diengdoh and H S Thangkhiew, said, “Two vehicles of the Meghalaya High Court, wherein officers were present, were also attacked, and persons, which include a personal security officer and a driver, were assaulted.”
The bench said that the State government must produce the case diary of the attack. Meanwhile, the Advocate General informed the court about the steps being taken by the State government, including the formation of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct an expeditious investigation into the circumstances leading to the incidents on August 19.
The court was also informed about the arrest of KSU office bearers. So far, four KSU office bearers have been arrested.
Two vehicles belonging to the Meghalaya High Court were damaged by the miscreants, and court officers were assaulted during the bike rally. The court has listed the next hearing on the PIL on September 1 and ordered the State government to file a fresh status report and produce the case diary.
The violence had erupted during a bike rally organised by the KSU in Shillong on August 19, with incidents of attacks and vandalism reported during the unrest. The episode also triggered concerns over attacks on vehicles, including those bearing Assam registration numbers, prompting the Meghalaya government to order a probe and assure strict action against those involved.
The Centre subsequently deployed additional central forces to assist the State police in maintaining law and order.
