Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan recently recalled a personal on-field argument with Sri Lanka cricket great Kumar Sangakkara during a 2005 Test match in Delhi, which was later resolved when both joined the same Indian Premier League (IPL) team.
Speaking on JioHotstar's ' Cheeky Singles' programme, Pathan explained that the confrontation occurred at the Feroz Shah Kotla after he was sent up the order to open the innings and scored 93 runs, including two sixes off Muttiah Muralitharan.
Origin of Conflict: The Sri Lankan team was frustrated over a changed box of balls during the match, with Sangakkara being the most vocal critic. Personal Sledging: Frustrated by Pathan's attacking play, Sangakkara accused the Indian team of cheating and made personal comments, prompting Pathan to retaliate.
Reconciliation: The two players later crossed paths as teammates for Kings XI Punjab in the IPL, where mutual apologies led to a close friendship. Pathan admitted that sharing a dressing room was initially awkward.
However, after apologizing to Sangakkara while eating with his family, both players put the argument behind them, reflecting on how maturity can resolve heated on-field moments.
