Guwahati, Sept 10: The city is set to host its first international marathon on February 7, 2027, with around 12,000 participants from India and abroad expected to take part in various race categories. 25 crore, making it one of the country's major prize-money road races.

Interacting with the press at a city hotel on Thursday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the event would combine elite competition with mass participation. “The Guwahati International Marathon will bring together elite sporting competition and mass participation.

With around 12,000 participants expected from India and across the world, the event will provide a platform for professional athletes, running clubs, fitness enthusiasts and people of all age groups,” Sarma said. 195-km full marathon will be open to professional and long-distance runners, with the organisers expecting around 30 leading male and female distance runners from across the world.

5-km inclusive runs. While the 10-km category will offer a competitive format for organised road-race participants, the 5-km run will cater to families, corporate groups and youth.

5-km inclusive run will further widen participation among people from different age groups and backgrounds. Registrations will open online on September 11, 2026, through the official event website.

The races will start and finish at Judges Field, with the route taking participants past several prominent locations in Guwahati. From Judges Field, the course will proceed towards Gauhati University and the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu before heading towards IIT Guwahati and returning to Judges Field via the bridge.

Sarma said the course had been measured by Kim Vivian of Australia, a Grade A-certified road race course measurer. Experienced race professional Richard will serve as race director, while Ian Landbrook will coordinate the elite athletes.

Former Asian Marathon Championship winner Sunita Godara will serve as the elite athlete coordinator for India, while Olympic medallist and badminton star P V Sindhu will be the brand ambassador of the marathon. “This marathon is not only about competition.

It is also about showcasing Guwahati and Assam to participants and visitors from across the country and the world. We expect the event to give a significant boost to tourism and strengthen Guwahati’s position as a destination for sports tourism,” Sarma said.
