Former Assam Leader of the Opposition and Congress leader Debabrata Saikia has urged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to intervene in alleged irregularities regarding flood relief distribution in Nazira and adjoining areas.

In a letter written in Assamese sent to the Chief Minister on Thursday, Saikia claimed that beneficiary lists for flood-hit families in Sintak Bormising, N-Kapahua, Khatkhati Gaon Panchayat, and other parts of Nazira were prepared and approved on a “partisan basis.” He stated that several families whose houses were completely submerged or severely damaged have yet to receive the announced assistance.

Saikia specifically highlighted complaints from residents of Khatkhati Gaon Panchayat, who alleged that the panchayat president acted selectively rather than impartially when preparing the list of genuine flood victims.

To underline gaps in relief and emergency response, the letter detailed two specific cases:

• Emergency Response Failure: Gyanjit Barua died on July 20 after his family could not secure a vehicle to transport him for dialysis during the floods. Despite contacting 108, the Nazira police station, and the gaonburha, help did not arrive in time. Saikia requested Rs 9 lakh compensation for Barua’s family from the NDRF and Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, calling for the death to be classified as flood-related.
• Unpaid Relief: Moni Borgohain of N-Kapahua reported that although the area was inundated, not a single family had received the announced Rs 15,000 relief.

Saikia urged the Chief Minister to conduct an impartial inquiry into the beneficiary selection, relief distribution, and emergency response, while ensuring aid reaches all genuinely affected families across the region.
