GUWAHATI, Aug 13: Assam sports minister Biswajit Daimary on Wednesday announced that the State government will give a reward of Rs 30 lakh to boxer Lovlina Borgohain as a mark of respect for her silver medal at the recently concluded Glasgow Commonwealth Games. “We are so proud of Lovlina Borgohain and the way she has made us proud by winning medals in all the major sporting events of the world. As a mark of respect, the Assam government will offer her Rs 30 lakh,” said Daimary while attending a felicitation programme organised by the Assam Amateur Boxing Association (AABA) in Guwahati on Wednesday. The minister also said the government has allotted Rs 12 lakh annually to the Lovlina Borgohain Boxing Academy in North Guwahati. “As Lovlina had requested some assistance from the government, we have decided to help her academy so that more young players from our State can become champion boxers,” he added. Lovlina thanked the sports minister and the Assam government for the support. Speaking on the occasion, Lovlina recalled her early days and said she had always felt welcomed irrespective of whether she won a medal or not. She also spoke about how happy she felt after winning a Commonwealth medal to add to her collection of Olympic, Asian and World Championship medals. “I want to thank the government for backing me in every way, and this amount for my academy will help in more than one way. I have been asking for some financial assistance for the academy, and I appreciate that the request has been met promptly,” the 75-kg boxer said. Apart from the AABA, the Assam Olympic Association, Assam Football Association, Assam Weightlifting Association, Assam Sepak Takraw Association, Assam Kho Kho Association and other organisations felicitated Lovlina for her success. Lovlina, who has now completed her medal collection across the Olympics, World Championships, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, thanked the government for its continued support. She is the only athlete from Assam to have won medals at all four major multi-sport events. The event was attended by AABA president and former minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya, AABA general secretary Hemanta Kumar Kalita, Assam Olympic Association general secretary Lakhya Konwar and other representatives from the state’s sporting fraternity. The Assam government also handed over an indoor sports facility in the Rani area to the boxing federation. The outer field at the same location, along with another ground in Dhakuakhana, was handed over to the Assam Football Association. Lovlina’s latest achievement adds another significant chapter to her career, with the boxer having now won medals at the Olympics, World Championships, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. Her success has also made her one of the most accomplished sportspersons to emerge from Assam. The Glasgow Commonwealth Games marked another major milestone in Lovlina’s career as she continued her run of medal-winning performances at the highest level.
