JORHAT — Assam expects to obtain a clear estimate of flood-related losses, damages, and rehabilitation funds by September 10 following a door-to-door assessment in four Upper Assam districts, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Friday.
Speaking to reporters after an official training meeting at the Jorhat Convention Centre, Sarma stated that the first phase of the assessment will run from August 9 to August 30. A subsequent reverification phase will rectify errors and identify omissions before final estimates are set.
Key details of the assessment and relief measures include:
Digital Assessment: Officials will upload images of damages to a dedicated app to maintain transparency and evidence-based records. Preliminary Fund Projections: Initial calculations of required state and central rehabilitation funds will be prepared by August 30.
School Assistance: The government has sanctioned Rs 2 lakh each to 793 flood-affected schools for preliminary repairs. Students whose schools remain unfit will be accommodated in nearby institutions.
Regarding rising urban and artificial flooding in Jorhat, Sarma highlighted that public cooperation is necessary to keep drains clear. Drawing from his work on Guwahati's flood issues since 2001, he noted that plastic bottles and household waste frequently clog drains during cleaning drives.
The Chief Minister instructed the Jorhat district administration to examine local flooding patterns closely and take necessary steps to address the problem.
