Guwahati, Sept 18: Assam swept all four team titles at the Yonex-Sunrise North East Zone Inter-State Badminton Championship 2026 in Shillong, with the senior men’s and women’s teams also securing qualification for the 2027 National Games as North East zone champions. After Assam’s junior boys and girls teams won their respective finals in the morning, the senior teams completed the clean sweep later in the day on Thursday.

At the Indoor Stadium of the Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex, Assam defeated Manipur 3-1 in the men’s final. Shubhankar Dutta lost the opening singles match, but Assam won the next three matches to claim the title.

Tanmay Bikash Barua and Orijit Chaliha won their singles matches, while Suraj Goala and Swarnaraj Bora secured the doubles victory. In the women’s final, Assam beat Mizoram 3-0.

Ashmita Chaliha and Muyuri Barman won the singles matches before Asmita and Manali Bora combined to win the doubles. In Tuesday night’s semifinals, Assam’s men defeated Mizoram, while the women’s team beat Arunachal Pradesh.

The junior boys also won their final 2-0 against Arunachal Pradesh. The one-sided tie lasted just 57 minutes.

Bornil Aakash Changmai won the singles before partnering Anayan Bora to victory in the doubles. Assam’s junior girls defeated Mizoram 2-1.

Gargi Saikia put Assam ahead with a singles win, but Bhavishya Changmai and Abhika Borgohain lost the doubles match. Naimikha Saikia then won the deciding third match to secure the title for Assam.

The championship will continue until September 19, with singles, doubles and mixed doubles events in the men’s, women’s, boys’ and girls’ categories to be held after the completion of the team events.
