Guwahati/Jorhat, Aug 11: Around 200-250 teachers regularised from contractual service under Assam’s Special Recruitment Drive (SRD) are yet to receive their salaries due to errors in their bank account details, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said on Tuesday. Addressing the press, Pegu said the issue affecting SRD teachers had largely been resolved, with most of the 15,029 teachers covered under the regularisation exercise having already received their salaries. “There are 200 to 250 teachers who have specific errors or issues in their bank account details. That is why, among the 15,000 SRD teachers, they have still not received their salaries. We will rectify those errors and ensure they receive their due payments,” the minister said. Explaining the administrative issues behind the delay, Pegu said many of the teachers were originally recruited as elementary teachers under Samagra Shiksha but were later shifted to secondary schools following the amalgamation of institutions. “As a result, they now come under the Drawing and Disbursing Officer (DDO), the Inspector of Schools. Around 400 teachers’ bills have therefore been prepared by the Inspector of Schools,” he said. Pegu also announced that the Education Department had decided against continuing salary payments to SRD teachers through the SNA-SPARSH mechanism. “We have decided not to keep them under SNA-SPARSH and instead allow their salaries to be processed like those of any other regular teacher. It may take a few days because of reforms, but the issue will be resolved,” he said. Pegu also assured that contractual teachers under Samagra Shiksha would receive their pending salaries by Tuesday and said there was no issue regarding their payments. “As the Education Minister, I would like to assure all teachers that we will work to ensure they receive their salaries on the first day of every month from next time,” he said, adding that government officials had been working round-the-clock to resolve the matter. The clarification came on a day when around 250 SRD teachers gathered at Jorhat Sadar Police Station and submitted a complaint seeking an investigation into the proposed shift of their salary payments from district treasuries to the Dispur Treasury under a budget head generally associated with government schemes.The teachers questioned why they were being brought under the SPARSH-based payment mechanism despite having been regularised in 2024 and receiving salaries through district treasuries for the past two years.Alleging a lack of transparency, they sought a high-level inquiry into the salary disbursement process. Meanwhile, Pegu announced that the long-awaited teacher transfer process would begin on Tuesday. “Transfer orders for both elementary and secondary school teachers will be issued in phases. However, we cannot violate the prescribed Pupil-Teacher Ratio (PTR). We cannot transfer teachers in a way that leaves a school with no teacher or only one teacher,” he said. According to the minister, the first phase will cover mutual transfers, followed by other eligible transfers where PTR norms permit. In cases where replacement teachers are required, arrangements will be made before transfer orders are issued.
