Both OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini have officially reached 1 billion users, marking a major milestone in the competitive artificial intelligence landscape.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced on X that Gemini has reached 1 billion monthly users, making it Google's fastest-growing product ever and the 14th Google product to reach the 1 billion user mark. OpenAI previously revealed in an August 6 blog post that over 1 billion people are using ChatGPT.

Key user statistics and growth figures from both companies include:

• ChatGPT: OpenAI spokesperson Lindsay McCallum confirmed ChatGPT hit 1 billion weekly users in July, up from 900 million weekly active users in February.
• Gemini: Google reported 750 million monthly users in February and 950 million in late July. Google spokesperson Alex Joseph stated Gemini reached 1 billion users last week.
• Mobile Distribution: Gemini chief Josh Woodward posted that Gemini has over 100 million active users on iOS, implying the vast majority of its users are on Android.

Although ChatGPT remains the larger platform overall, its growth rate has slowed down from earlier periods. Meanwhile, Gemini's steady gains suggest it may currently be the faster-growing platform of the two.
