15 from Assam receive gallantry, service medals on Independence Day

New Delhi, Aug 15: A total of 15 personnel from Assam have been awarded gallantry and service medals on the occasion of Independence Day, recognising their distinguished service, devotion to duty and acts of bravery. The awardees include one President’s Medal for Distinguished Service, and 11 Medals for Meritorious Service. The awards is an annual recognition of personnel who render valuable service in policing, firefighting, civil defence, home guards and correctional services. Inspector General of Police Devojyoti Mukherjee is the sole recipient of the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service from Assam this year. The 11 Assam Police personnel selected for the Medal for Meritorious Service are Inspector General V Siva Prasad Ganjala, Assistant Inspector General Sarmistha Barua, Commandant Santanu Kumar Dutta, Superintendent of Police Amitav Basumatary, Superintendent of Police Subhasish Baruah, Superintendent of Police Suman Chakraborty, Deputy Superintendent of Police Aker Ali, Lance Naiks Ripon Paul, Nanda Tripura and Surajit Mozumder, and Assistant Sub-Inspector Prabin Baro. Two fire services personnel from Assam – Leading Fireman Lohit Saikia and Sub-Officer Md Shaha Alom Sikdar – have also been honoured. Abiram Islary, a Platoon Commander, has been awarded in the Home Guard and Civil Defence category. Across the Northeast, several security personnel have been recognised for gallantry and distinguished service. From Arunachal Pradesh, Superintendent of Police Sudhanshu Dhama has received the Medal for Gallantry, the only such award to personnel from the region. Manipur secured one President’s Medal for Distinguished Service and six Medals for Meritorious Service, while Meghalaya has three recipients of the Medal for Meritorious Service. In Mizoram, one personnel has been awarded the Medal for Gallantry and two have received Medals for Meritorious Service. Nagaland has one recipient each of the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service and the Medal for Meritorious Service. One police personnel from Sikkim has been awarded the Medal for Meritorious Service, while five personnel from Tripura have received the same honour.
