JFD agitation intensifies as offices locked across Manipur

Imphal, August 22: The agitation led by the Just Fair Delimitation (JFD) over its demand for completion of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise before the Census intensified on Saturday, with volunteers locking government offices across the valley and students staging protests against the closure of educational institutions.JFD volunteers locked several State and Central Government establishments as part of the organisation’s boycott, while excluding offices providing essential services. The latest drives were reported at the Lilong Nagar Panchayat office in Thoubal district, CGST offices at Thambalkhong and Andro Parking, and the SDO office at Waikhong. The actions followed similar office-locking drives at the Bishnupur DC Office and some banks a day earlier.Meanwhile, the JFD student wing organised sit-ins, dharnas and rallies at several locations, opposing the closure of educational institutions. In Thoubal, protests were held at offices under the DC Complex, while demonstrations were also reported at NABARD, Central Bank and MSLRM offices in Imphal West.JFT Student co-convener Denil Yumlembam questioned the Education Department’s notification ordering the closure of educational institutions, saying students were opposed to the move. He also criticised the registration of an FIR against JFD convenor Jeetendra Ningombam and urged the State and Central governments to ensure that students were not assaulted during protests.“JFD condemns the FIR against the convenor of JFD", Yumlembam said, while appealing to the authorities to prevent any incidents of assault during student protests. The agitation has also continued beyond daytime office blockades, with night protests, rallies and sit-ins reported from several parts of the valley. Sit-ins were held at Wangkei Angom Leikai and Soibum Leikai, among other areas, as protesters continued to press the “No NRC, No Census” demand. The escalation comes as the JFD seeks to maintain pressure on the government over its address the NRC-Census demand, while student groups have separately intensified protests over the closure of educational institutions.
