Guwahati: Schools in Assam's flood-affected districts will begin resuming classes from August 10 wherever conditions permit, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu announced on Friday. Alternative teaching arrangements will be provided for institutions that remain unfit for immediate reopening.

Restoration work, including the removal of silt deposited by the floods, is currently progressing across affected schools. The Education Department has instructed district authorities to resume academic activities wherever campuses are functional.

Key details regarding the reopening include:

• Sivasagar District Impact: Out of 1,250 schools in Sivasagar district, 545 were affected by the recent floods.
• Reopening Timeline: Functional schools in Sivasagar and other districts have been directed to restart classes from August 10.
• Alternative Arrangements: For schools unusable due to silt or structural damage, flexible measures similar to those adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic will be implemented to prevent learning loss.

Minister Pegu emphasized that the government is taking measures to ensure students' education does not suffer. While teaching environments have already been restored in many institutions, cleaning and repair efforts remain ongoing in others.
